When I was growing up, my dad was in numerous volunteer organizations as well as some elected positions. He was known in our community both professionally and for his service. I grew up thinking that service to your community is just what people do!

After all, if we all invest in the people and places around us, are we not all better off? I think so. As an adult, I have volunteered at my children’s schools, at our library, on community boards, and on our city council. I would like to say I had an impact on the betterment of my family as well as my neighbors. And I have also seen my children volunteer!

So what do you get out of this public service? A lot! Sure there are some sacrifices of time and duty, but really you will just feel better. A sense of unity, belonging and community. A sense of satisfaction as words become actions and actions become realities (think book fairs, community parks, programs for children or seniors).

You can take pride in helping others as well as your own well being. After all, when we gather with others, great things will happen! As the saying goes, there is power in numbers. Taking ownership in community programs is a way of investing in your future!

It does not matter if you serve on a small scale or large scale, the point is to just serve others! We all win!

May you find service possibilities to serve along your path!
