As I sit here writing this, there are peaceful riots across the United States as a result of the horrendous murder of Mr. Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There is also rioting and destruction. There are assumptions and accusations everywhere. Please let me challenge everyone to take a step back and take a deep breath!
While some may argue this in light of what has been happening, I still believe we live in the greatest country on earth. Yes, we have challenges and yes we have changes that need to happen socially, economically, and with equality. But the destruction of people, places and things only creates a divide. I challenge us all to seek inclusion, respect and peace.
Often we are looking at generalization statements rather than looking at the true problem. Racism is not a black problem, but one that we all should be investing in eliminating. All police officers are not racist, but rather some people are racist. We need to also show respect for different opinions, especially when it comes to how we right injustices.
So many times I hear the passion in people about a cause. That very passion is what we need to utilize to bring about change. But let me offer some suggestions: 1. know your audience (meaning there are some who you will never change their point of view) ; 2. do not make generalizations that end up hurting the very people you are trying to motivate (use words like some or most and not all); 3. reference your opinion and feelings as yours not facts (say in my opinion or I believe); 4. do not throw out blanket accusations (there are always exceptions). Seek to hear all points of view. Validate others right to their opinions. Seek the common ground as a starting place to build upon. So often we only see the divide rather than the common.
We live in a country that allows us to be different and have different points of view. Some have not been shown these rights and we need to seek inclusion and justice for ALL. Let us all work together, with respect, and a desire to heal as we move forward.
May your path be filled with respectful passion in bringing justice to all!
