Relationships, we all have them. They include parents, siblings, spouse, workmates, friends, maybe even the mailman and the guy who takes your order of coffee. We put different degrees of effort into different relationships but they all require one thing. They require communication!
First, we need to actually communicate. What that means is that pouting, isolating and ignoring difficult or challenging discussions are not going to enhance a relationship.
We also need to consider that communication requires two. Each has a role. One needs to listen and one needs to communicate. And then the other needs to listen to the communication. It has to be on a somewhat equal basis.
So often we see things through our colored glasses and tunnel vision and don’t stop to think about the person we are communicating with and what their glasses may look like. It’s call perspective.
Bottom line is that to have a relationship on any level you need to effectively communicate. There is give and take. There is an exchange. Of course there are many other things that will enhance communication, but these are some essentials!
So the next time you are struggling in a relationship, of any type, consider your communication. If the relationship is important, you may need to make some adjustments in your communication. Words are powerful. Use them wisely!
May your path be filled with effective and enjoyable communication!
