While we know who is in our family, we might not know everyone in our community.  Hopefully though, you live in community that makes you feel welcome and supported.  And hopefully, you also welcome and support others.

That sense of belonging, can have a powerful impact on whether you feel safe or threatened emotionally, physically, socially and mentally.  It goes both ways though as we too have a responsibility to offer that same safety to others.

Many times the shared locale breaks the bond.  A simple smile can initiate inclusion.  An offer of assistance by way of holding a door open for another.  These are simple steps in creating a sense of community.  Others, can be more time and commitment intensive, like building a community park, a fundraising walk to raise funds for the needy, or even ringing the bell for Salvation Army.  The common denominator is giving of yourself for those around you.  It becomes a bond.  It builds up others, especially those in need.  Interestingly though, it can also make you feel better about yourself and those around you-your community.

Sometimes our “community” is those who live in the same apartment building, or those who we work with, or those who attend the same church.  We may belong to several communities at the same time.  Whatever your community, be a part, take a part, and support where you can.

May your path take you along many communities where you can give and receive!
