The Stigma of Mental Health
May is Mental Health Month. This is the perfect time of year to take a look at our mental well being. Do you get a physical exam every year? Do you go see your dentist twice a year? Do you seek a therapist when your mental well being is not quite at it’s peak?
So many people live with anxiety, depression, marital discord, grief, etc. when there is professional help available. Often the reason for not seeking that professional health is the stigma of going to a counselor, therapist or psychologist. Others may think you are not normal! Well guess what? There is no such thing as normal! We are all different and we all struggle to various degrees.
As Ernest Hemingway stated: “We are all broken, that is how the light gets in.” The funny thing is that mental health gets a stigma but really we all have our struggles. None of which we would chose to have. Just like you would not chose to have a broken arm.
When in need, get the help! Counseling will ease the burden. The struggles are real and so are the solutions.
May you find the peace along your path!
