First I will repeat myself from previous years…I highly discourage making New Years Resolutions. Yes I realize that is contrary to popular opinion. Rather I encourage goals. While that may appear to be a matter of semantics, I will explain. When we make a resolution, we resolve to act or do accordingly. There is no wiggle room for error. So basically we are setting ourselves up for failure. When we set goals, there is an assumption built in that we will have to take actions steps to achieve the goals. Further, when we start digging in to work toward our goals, we can also assume that we will have setbacks. That is part of the process. It doesn’t mean we quit or have failed. Trust me, I have “failed” at resolutions, but each year I set goals. I might still be working toward goals I set a couple years ago, but as we all are, I’M A WORK IN PROGRESS!
I often share with clients that we all have the “opportunity” to learn from our mistakes. It is merely a part of the process of life. That too is part of working toward achieving our goals. We can learn what not to do; what to do differently; or the reality that we need to set a different course. None of that means you failed. It simply means you are smart enough to know when to take the information and do differently.
So if you did set a resolution, change it up into a goal. What are the steps you need to take to achieve the goal? Is there a time frame? Be gentle on yourself. Learn from the process, not just the end game. Share your “wins” and share your “lessons learned.”
I encourage you to share your goals with at least one other person. Someone to help be your cheerleader! So in holding myself accountable, I am share my goals with your all:
1. I will loose some weight. No number given. To achieve the goal, I will work with a weigh loss company. I will record EVERYTHING I eat. I will seek out some type of routine physical activity.
2. I will work on de-cluttering my home picking one room a month. Basically this is a result of having three grown children who now live on their own!
3. I will write another book.
4. I will organize my days a little better, with focus on building my business!
Finally, my word of the Year will be my guiding focus. (More to come on that word in a future article!)
