So you might wonder why a mental health counselor would be writing about spending money wisely. The fact is, I’m terrible with money. I spend it very easily. In fact I get an emotional high from shopping. And then am depressed when the bills come due. So I know personally as well as professionally how mental health and spending go hand in hand!
Black Friday used to be one of my favorite days of the year! I got a “free pass” to spend money in the guise of gifts for Christmas. Now I rarely go shopping on Black Friday. I buy gifts through out the year when I see something I think the receiver will enjoy. I also create a budget and track how much I spend. I still get those emotional “highs” but they are from the smiles on the faces of those whom receive the gifts.
Thanksgiving offers us the opportunity to gather with those we love. Cherish the smiles, enjoy the company and create some memories. Do the same at Christmas. While the gifts are fun, we rarely remember the gifts but we do remember how we feel about others. Remember that as you go about your holiday shopping.
May your path find you spending wisely and focusing on the people and not the presents.
