Check Their Shoes!

My first job out of college, an older woman who took me under her wings.  She told me about Arby’s chocolate milkshakes (still a favorite of mine) and as a woman in a male dominated workforce, how to get the attention of men in the room.  She passed away years ago but her mentoring and wisdom will live on forever in my heart and mind.

It was a lesson of “pass it on.”  I have tried to honor Mona and her guidance by supporting other women along the way.  Of course I believe I may have helped some men as well, but my support of other women is especially significant.

In a world where we are given the impression that it is every (wo)man for themselves, we tend to close rank on those who we share our wisdom with.  I’m not afraid of a little competition.  I’ve tried to value constructive criticism.  And I have found peace in sharing with others.

It is a deeply embedded belief that by helping someone else, we all succeed.  How so?  The person getting the “wisdom” gains knowledge.  The provider gains a feeling of caring.  Everyone wins.  In a divisive world, can you image how much more peaceful life would be if we all embraced that philosophy?

I’d remiss if I didn’t point out that  17 years ago was a wonderful example of people helping people.  The United States, often polarized politically, came together and we all stood side by side to help and we continue to honor those who were impacted by 9/11.

And while I believe we all benefit from helping others, I believe women helping women is especially important.  Women have had to fight harder and longer to achieve the same wages, positions, respect as our male counterparts.

As as for the shoes, Mona told me to stare at the men’s shoes.  It throws them off, thinking there is something wrong with them!  You will get their attention!

May you find yourself helping, supporting and guiding others, especially women, along your path.
