Change is in the Air
When people come into my Counseling office, it is because they are in distress, stuck in a place in their life that is uncomfortable, even painful. I start with sharing that I do not have a magic wand, (and if I did, I’d be waving it around myself!) and that anytime we don’t like where we are in our life, we need to make changes. I may provide the direction, but the client needs to do the work. And the work, well that is all about CHANGE.
As the saying goes, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Point being, if it didn’t work the first few times, you need to do something else. The “something else” is change.
We are impacted by changes every day: construction ahead, so you are directed to a different route to work; you get older, your body doesn’t function at it’s prime; you get married; you have a baby; you get a new joy, in a new location, with new expectations; you try a new food. Every day we are exposed to new possibilities and challenges and we adapt and change as we live each day. Some changes we welcome; some changes we dread. Some changes are significant and some so slight we may not even notice we have changed. Change is inevitable.
Interestingly though, most people resist change. I say, bring it on! It’s going to happen and we can either dig our heal in or we can embrace the journey. As we begin this new year, look for areas in your life you want to change. Make plans to help those changes along. When you are confronted with something you don’t want to change in your life, examine if there are possibilities for compromise, for new insights, new experiences.
Expect changes along your path and be open for the possibilities!
