May is Mental Health Month

Each May I am reminded that many people struggle with mental health issues, including grief, depression, relationship distress, and so on but do not seek counseling.   The reasons vary from a time commitment, financial, to the stigma that much of society places on mental health and seeking help.

The irony is that those who seek mental health counseling are actually the strong ones.  They are facing their struggles.  They are admitting they need help and improving their lives.  They should be applauded not discouraged.

The reality is that there is no such thing as “normal”.  We all have our own issues, hurts, struggles.  Some seek to improve; some stay stuck and pretend that everything is okay; and some succumb to misery.

Our mental and physical health are closely related.  They both need and deserve our attention.  While it is common to seek a physical health exam each year, it is not common to give the same priority to our mental health.  It should be a priority!  Don’t we all deserve to seek happiness?

When you see a family member or friend struggling with their thoughts and feelings, encourage them to seek a professional.  Your assurance might be what they need to seek help.  In the process you will be helping them and breaking the stigma!

May you seek the help you need, physically and emotionally, along your path!
