THE SANDWICH GENERATION
I have three grown children in their 20’s and living on their own. They are my world even though I don’t get to see them everyday. I also have a mom who has multiple health issues. While she lives in an assisted living residence, she relies on me to get her groceries, medications, take her to doctor appointments, do her laundry and other miscellaneous things. Oh and I own my own business, am an elected official, am on several community boards. I won’t even comment on the needs of my puppy! Does any of this sound familiar? I am in the Sandwich Generation. I care for my mom but also help out my children as needed.
Recently my mom wanted groceries, but my husband and I were gone for over a week, attending our son’s college graduation and getting him moved into an apartment across the country! Talk about a pull in both directions! I felt the stress and responsibility of attending to both of their needs.
Over the years, I have heard similar stories again and again. Is there any help or solutions? Yes!
The most important thing to know and to believe: If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of others! The next truth is: You need boundaries!
