When I was growing up, my mom gave my brothers and I a new Christmas ornament each year. Following tradition, I got a new ornament for my children (still do and they are in their 20’s!). So when I decorate the Christmas tree it really is a walk down memory lane. I have Raggedy Ann, Strawberry Shortcake, Owls/Chi Omega (my sorority) ornaments. My daughter has a collection of Barbie, Tinkle Bell and Harry Potter ornaments. One son has a collection of Star Wars and sports ornaments; while the other has Sponge Bob, Scooby Doo and sports ornament. I cherish the handmade ornaments the kids made, especially the ones with pictures on them. I look at the decorated tree and just smile, remembering times of long ago.
While we all have memories that bring heartache, I try to let those memories slip by and focus on the cherished ones. This past year, my dog passed away. When I was decorating the tree, I found several ornaments with her name and face on them. I considered not putting them up on the tree, but decided to display them. Yes there is some sadness, but I am choosing to remember all the love and comfort she gave me. She is a part of my journey in life and I cherish the memories she has created for me.
The Christmas season often conjures up memories of Christmas’ past. Many are cherished and bring a smile to your face. Remember them with a warm heart. And also focus on the present while you are making memories for you future!
May you find yourself cherishing past memories and creating new memories as you go along your path!
