The debate over nature or nurture has been going on forever. I personally believe we are shaped by both our internal composition as well as our environmental settings. I also believe we never stop changing. As more life experiences come our way, we add them to the collection of what makes us each unique individuals. The obvious factors include age, developmental progress, family dynamics, socioeconomic influences, marital status, intellectual and physical disposition.
I like the idea of not being stagnant. It gives me hope that I can change and am not limited by either nature or nurture! While there are factors I cannot change (I’m 5 foot 1 and the option to be at least 5 foot 5 is only available with rather tall heels!), I can choose how I respond and incorporate these factors into my life.
While we may not like our life circumstances, we have the option to make changes. Sure, change can be scary. Sometimes it can feel like jumping out of a plane without a parachute. I once quit a job, went back to school and entered a completely different field of work. Turned out great. But even if it had not, I took a chance to try something new when I was not happy where I was. So often we let fear immobilize us and we stay stuck in misery.
While life offers no guarantee, we can all choose to stay put or keep experimenting and experiencing life. I hope you choose to move forward, not let fear stop you, and continue to explore!
May your path find you ever moving forward!
