As a mental health counselor, I have the opportunity and privilege of helping people improve their lives and find a more peaceful way to go through the trials, struggles and challenges of life. Toward the end of last year, several people, in different settings, asked if I listened to my own advise. Specifically this involved taking time for myself, “feeding my soul”, finding and seeking activities that bring me joy. Not being one to lie or “sugar coat” the truth, I was compelled to answer, “No, I usually don’t.” Wow, that was pretty eye-opening for me. In all practicality I was living a hypocritical life. I was not being true to what I knew would be a better way to live.
All too often people believe if someone is sitting down to read a book, drawing in an adult coloring book (a new trend that I highly recommend!), taking a nap, or a little more adventurous by way of a round of golf or playing a game of basketball, that they are taking time away from work or home activities and it is a bad thing. Quite the opposite is true. We all need time to decompress. We need to let our brains turn to silent and just free flow. We need to engage in activities that either bring us joy or allow us to rejuvenate. It is only then that we will be better equipped to handle the struggles of life, challenges of work, stress of money or relationships, etc.
IT IS NOT SELFISH! I encourage you to find a few activities or hobbies that you enjoy. Make sure you participate in them on a regular basis. Take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself will allow you to have the energy and wisdom to be better face your life’s path.
May your path be filled with many side trips that bring you peace and joy!
